Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award Nomination

About the Award

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award recognizes nine students who attend a school in Alberta, operated by an ASBA member school board, who have shown tremendous growth in developing skills to better themselves through determination, initiative and independence, leading to their improvement and success both academically and personally. 

Each recipient is presented with: 

  • An award certificate and congratulatory letter;  

  • Medal

In total, nine awards are distributed each year to Alberta student nominees who attend a school in Alberta that is operated by an ASBA member school board based on their academic achievement, attitudes, actions and characteristics in pursuit of their educational path.

Award categories are divided into three regions North, Central and South. In each region, awards are divided into the following grade categories:

  • Grade 6

  • Grade 9

  • Grade 11

Recipients can be nominated by: 

  • Teachers

  • Principals

  • Superintendents

  • Trustees

  • School staff or liaisons

  • Elders and Knowledge Keepers

  • Any other member of the education community

Nominator Tips

The following award criteria and relevant examples of evidence are provided to guide nominators in the process of creating quality nomination packages.

A significant level of academic improvement

Please provide nominee examples that show how the nominee:  

  • Shows a desire to work hard and contribute  

  • Actively participates in their learning journey   

  • Displays consistent effort  

  • Strives to do their best 

  • Demonstrates a positive attitude 

  • Stays dedicated to achieving goals  

  • Sees tasks through to completion, even when faced with challenges 

Consistently responsible, caring and respectful actions

Please provide nominee examples that show how the nominee:  

  • Is accepting of fellow students  

  • Appreciates people for who they are  

  • Considers the perspectives of others in actions and decision-making  

  • Encourages others  

Perseverance in the pursuit of school achievement

Please provide nominee examples that show how the nominee:  

  • Demonstrates continuous improvement  

  • Overcomes challenges  

  • Sets realistic and attainable goals 

  • Shows consistent effort 

  • Works with focus and determination  

  • Organizes time and prioritizes tasks to complete work efficiently and avoids procrastination 

Improvement in work ethic, attitude, attendance and interactions with others

Please provide nominee examples that show how the nominee:  

  • Is truthful, transparent, and ethical  

  • Maintains high standards even when no one is watching 

  • Consistently shows up on time and meets deadlines 

  • Demonstrates that others can count on them to deliver 

  • Cooperates and works well with others 

  • Values the input of teammates 

  • Contributes to a positive work environment 

Modelling leadership that inspires their peers

Please provide nominee examples that show how the nominee:  

  • Guides fellow students and others  

  • Takes initiative  

  • Actively pursues goals for community and school  

  • Makes opportunities to include others  

  • Works to improve communication skills 

  • Serves as a role model in everyday situations  

  • Takes ownership of tasks and results, both good and bad 

  • Proactively seeks ways to contribute, solve problems, or make improvements 

Maintains strength, self-care and a positive attitude in pursuit of their personal path to education and life goals

  • Presents awareness of self and identity  

  • Actively seeks opportunities to grow, develop new skills, and improve performance over time. 

  • Willing to adjust to new tasks, changes in direction, or different working conditions without losing momentum.
